Walker Books is home to a list of award-winning and bestselling children’s and YA authors, illustrators and brands. We are looking for a creative and results-driven Marketing Officer to join our Consumer Marketing team and devise effective marketing campaigns across the list.

We’re looking for a marketeer with plenty of ideas for campaigns that will engage readers and drive sales. You will be a confident communicator, adept at juggling a range of projects and deadlines.

In this role you will work across the marketing mix, writing engaging copy, briefing our in-house design team, external agencies and printers, developing partnerships with third parties, managing campaign budgets, and co-ordinating marketing activity at events.

You will also co-ordinate the digital elements of your campaigns, including setting up social media advertising, briefing trailers/photography, liaising with agencies on influencer activity, producing newsletters, and assisting on campaign websites. It is important that you have knowledge of the social media used by our various audience groups, and how best to leverage this in campaigns.

The role requires a strong background in marketing and a passion for children’s books. We’re looking for candidates with marketing experience from within publishing, or from working on key children’s brands, who are keen to take the next step in their career in a small and friendly team.

 

The Details:

Be responsible for the creation, implementation and execution of innovative consumer marketing plans for Walker’s books, brands and authors/illustrators:
• Contribute ideas and opinions to marketing strategy and campaign planning meetings, working closely with colleagues in the Publicity and Trade Marketing teams to co-ordinate activity
• Write engaging copy across a wide range of marketing materials and media
• Brief in-house designers, and external agencies, on projects
• Develop relationships with appropriate third parties to promote our books
• Cost and monitor budgets for campaigns, ensuring the in-house budget is kept up-to-date
• Develop relationships with print suppliers and organise the production of promotional materials
• Analysis of campaigns to inform future planning
• Maximise opportunities for sampling/data collection at events and organisation of marketing events where relevant
• Develop relationships with key authors/illustrators and their agents/estates, and communicate marketing plans with them on a regular basis
• Contribute to monthly board reports updating on consumer activity
• Liaise with the BA/Legal team to ensure all campaigns have the relevant contracts/permissions and are GDPR compliant

Work with the Senior Digital Marketing Manager on all aspects of digital marketing, social media and website activity:

The SDMM is responsible for all digital marketing and social media output from the marketing team, and is responsible for mentoring the MO in the digital marketing elements of campaigns, as well as ensuring all output is effective and on brand.

You will co-ordinate the digital marketing elements of your campaigns including:
• Working with illustrators/freelancers on the creation of videos, trailers and photography
• Setting up, running and feeding back on social media advertising (Instagram, Facebook, You Tube)
• Working with external agencies on digital/social campaigns, including paid-for influencer activity, primarily on TikTok and Instagram
• Strong working knowledge of social media channels and best fit for our different audience demographics, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, You Tube, Twitter
• Working with PR on campaign ideas to engage online influencers, with a focus on TikTok and Instagram
• Updating campaign mini sites and competition pages
• Creating and managing email newsletters
• Liaising with authors/illustrators on their online marketing ideas, and supporting them where appropriate
• Keeping abreast of emerging digital and social media trends
• Working with the SDMM and Business Affairs/Legal team to ensure that all digital marketing campaigns and elements are compliant with GDPR law and have the relevant permissions/agreements

 

The following experience, skills and knowledge are essential:

Experience of:
• The basic principles of marketing
• Minimum two years in a publishing or marketing environment
• Communicating confidently both in-house and out-of-house
• Working to tight deadlines and juggling a range of campaigns
• Demonstrable understanding of digital marketing and social media and how to apply this to campaigns – taking in, but not limited to, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, You Tube, Twitter

Proven skills:
• Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
• Working across a range of social media platforms, as outlined above
• Ability to plan, prioritise and manage a varied workload
• Highly self-motivated and enjoy working as part of a team, but able to work independently

The following experience is desirable:
• Basic video creation and editing
• Website CMS systems and blogging platforms

Knowledge of:
• Children’s book publishing industry or children’s books
