The BMS is inviting its members to delve into some of the most successful marketing campaigns of the past twelve months at its first Marketing Campaign Masterclass breakfast on Monday 25 January 2016 (9am-11.30am). The originators of three award-winning campaigns will be quizzed about the choices and stories that lie behind their work by James Spackman, Publisher of Profile Pursuit and branding consultant. Audience participation will be welcomed, with adult, children’s, big and small campaigns covered.
Joining the event to discuss their work will be award-winning marketers:
Sam Missingham, whose successful and highly influential online book festivals for sci-fi and romance at HarperCollins have engaged huge numbers of readers and challenged preconceptions about collaboration between publishers.
ElisaOfford, whose campaign for Hamish by Danny Wallace (S&S) helped launch an established adult author in the children’s sector, with a campaign that included a high-profile collaboration with World Book Day, innovative use of video, extensive third party partnerships and well-targeted consumer competitions.
Sarah Shea, whose low-budget campaign for All I Know Now by Carrie Hope Fletcher (Little, Brown) was exemplary in its persistence, smart use of author connections online and enlistment of genuine hard-core fans, as well as clever retail positioning.
The session aims to be open and interactive, with the opportunity for everyone attending to share any challenges they are facing in their own campaigns. A summary of all three campaigns will be circulated ahead of the masterclass and audience members will be encouraged to come armed with questions. We are aiming for a wide-ranging discussion about creating campaigns with real impact.

James Spackman is in the process of compiling some sort of publishing Grand Slam, having done time in sales (Bloomsbury, Hodder), marketing (John Murray), general management (Watkins/Osprey) and, most recently, editorial (at Profile, as Publisher of Pursuit, a cycling list). Marketing is in his blood, as anyone who has heard him speak about blurb, endmatter or ‘reader experience‘ can attest.
The BMS and Publishers Publicity Circle will once again combine forces at an aptly-themed joint-event for the London Book Fair on Wednesday 15 April 2015. Under the banner “We Are All in it Together: Collaborate or Compete?“, the session will examine the benefits and challenges of collaboration in the pursuit of book promotion.
Whether it be seeking out partnerships across niche and large-scale organisations, retailers, bookshops, bloggers or even other publishers, being imaginative and open-minded about the potential for collaboration is fast becoming an essential requirement for any successful campaign.
Over the course of an hour, five top speakers drawn from a cross-section of the book industry, media and business, will each draw on their extensive experience and present up to three practical ways in which marketers and publicists can collaborate with others in their next campaigns. The discussion will be chaired by Damian Horner (Brand Development Director, Hachette),with presentations by Nic Bottomley (Co-owner, Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights), Sean Carrigan (Times+), Margaret Heffernan (author of A Bigger Prize: Why Competition Isn’t Everything and How We Do Better), Sam Missingham (Head of Audience Development, HarperCollins) and Sandra Taylor (Head of Events, Waterstones).
What are examples of unusual collaborations executed successfully, and what kind of approach works best when seeking out new opportunities? How can you strike the right balance between openness and support among peers in a competitive industry, at a time when books need to work harder than ever to get the attention of consumers?
A fascinating not-to-be-missed session – entry is first-come, first-served and will be popular so do be sure to arrive early.
Venue/Room: Olympia Room Grand Hall, London Book Fair
Thursday June 21st will see the largest gathering of book marketing professionals this year as 170 leading designers, publishers and marketers join together at The Bookseller’s first Creativity Day. The day-long event pulls together two separate conferences covering design and marketing and ends with the presentation of the new Book Marketing Society Annual Awards.
The first half will be dedicated to the big topics of interest to marketeers, with speakers from the likes of Nike and Polydor as well as from the book industry, and will look at areas such as audience data, s.e.o. optimisation and the looming impact of “freemium” content.
Sam Missingham, head of events for The Bookseller said: “the big battleground in publishing over the next few years will be in marketing. Publishers have had to transition quickly from being trade marketers to being consumer-facing, and requires very different skills. Also, publishers have been trapped in book-by-book three-month marketing cycles, which in the digital space makes less and less sense, and all at the same time as budgets are being squeezed.”
The programme for the day has been overseen by marketing consultant and Bookseller columnist Damian Horner. “We need to see how other ‘content providers’ are adapting to the same challenges we face, people who work in music, video games, television and film, as well as finding out what has worked within publishing. I’ve aimed to pull together the most diverse collection of marketing and design experts ever to speak at a book industry event”, he said.
BMS is very pleased to announce a new event at London Book Fair on April 17th, in collaboration with the Publishers Publicity Circle. Aimed at tackling the very modern challenge faced by publicists and marketers alike, it asks who is responsible for social media and the online promotion of books? In the old days things seemed much simpler. Publicists dealt with the ‘free’ media – the papers, the TV, the radio, the book tour. Marketers orchestrated paid advertising campaigns and got the book trade buzzing.
But now with the lines between marketing and publicity becoming ever-blurred, what are the new skills being called into service, and what value can traditional roles bring to the table? As organisations, how are publishers, agencies and other creative industries adapting in order to cope?
The event includes a fantastic speaker line-up: Claire Armitstead, Books Editor from the Guardian; Joanna Ellis, Marketing Director of Faber and soon to be Associate Director of The Literary Platform; Amelia Fairney, Communications Director at Penguin and Michelle Goodall, freelance communications and social media specialist. The session will be moderated by BMS Chair Martin Neild.
This will be a packed one-hour session featuring case studies and practical examples, and will look to address the burning questions facing publicists, marketers and freelancers at the frontline of book promotion.
