We have an exciting opportunity for a creative, commercially aware and highly organized marketeer to join our energetic Communications team. As Senior Marketing Executive/Marketing Manager you will be responsible for planning and implementing effective, audience-appropriate campaigns to promote our books. You’ll be passionate about great communication, and understand how this works across everything from the 3D package of a book through to great creative for social and outdoor. You’ll have a strong design sense and the ability to brief effective creative as well as to write and brief copy for a range of audiences. You’ll be overseeing Bluebird’s social media channels and working closely with our in-house Digital Communications team to brief social media campaigns so you will need a deep understanding of social platforms. You will be adept at forging partnerships with brands, charities and other organisations, and be comfortable devising campaigns at a variety of budget levels.

Publishing experience is not required but marketing knowledge and a passion for books is.

Introduction to this role

Walker Books, the UK’s leading independent children’s book publisher, is home to a prestigious list of award-winning and bestselling authors, illustrators and brands.

We have an opportunity for a creative and proactive Marketing Officer to play a key role in our busy consumer marketing team, devising and implementing effective campaigns across our list.

Your role will involve writing engaging copy, briefing our in-house design team and external agencies, managing campaign budgets, developing partnerships with third parties, and      co-ordinating consumer marketing activity at events.

Working with our Digital Marketing Officer you will co-ordinate the digital and social elements of your campaigns, including running our picture books blog, setting up social media advertising, creating videos/trailers, sending email newsletters and updating campaign websites.

We’re looking for a creative marketeer with plenty of ideas for campaigns that will engage readers and drive sales. You will have a strong background in marketing, be a confident communicator, and adept at juggling a range of projects and deadlines.

The position requires a passion for children’s books and publishing, therefore candidates will need to have previous publishing experience, or experience working with key children’s brands.

Role profile: 

To be responsible for the creation, implementation and execution of innovative consumer marketing plans for books, brands, authors and licensed product 

  • Contribute ideas and opinions to marketing strategy and campaign planning meetings, working closely with colleagues in publicity and trade marketing to co-ordinate activity
  • Write engaging promotional copy across a wide range of marketing materials and media
  • Brief in-house designer and external agencies (e.g. media agency) on projects
  • Develop relationships with appropriate third parties to promote Walker Books, brands and authors
  • Cost and monitor budgets for campaigns, ensuring the in-house budget is updated
  • Develop relationships with print suppliers and liaise with in-house production team to ensure best price for promotional material
  • Analysis of campaigns to inform future planning
  • Maximise opportunities for sampling/data collection at events and organisation of marketing events where relevant

  • Keeping abreast of emerging digital trends, with an awareness of the new opportunities presented by digital marketing

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Marketing Officer

The following experience, skills and knowledge are essential:

Experience of:

  • The basic principles of marketing
  • Minimum two years in a publishing environment
  • Copy-writing, design and marketing skills
  • Communicating confidently both in-house and out-of-house
  • Working to tight deadlines and juggling a range of campaigns and projects
  • Demonstrable understanding of social media marketing and how to apply this to campaigns

Proven Skills in:

  • Computer usage, particularly Microsoft office applications – Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

Working as part of a small team, the Children’s Marketing Assistant will provide varied support across the trade marketing team on a wide range of campaigns and assist with general admin for the department. Job description

  • Assist the marketing team with varied campaign work alongside any ad-hoc and admin based duties
  • Brief and produce a variety of marketing materials, such as activity packs, social media assets, POS and sell-in material. Liaising with the internal editorial and design teams, and freelance designers throughout the process
  • Manage small-scale marketing campaigns for titles with a low marketing budget.
  • Provide copy and brief-in monthly email newsletters
  • Manage and update the children’s area of the Bloomsbury website
  • Work with Children’s Marketing Executive on the bi-annual children’s catalogue and rights guide, co-ordinating multiple departments within the company
  • Manage the Bloomsbury Children’s Books social media channels and coordinate scheduling via SproutSocial
  • Coordinate the submissions and content for trade partner newsletters and websites such as World Book Day, LoveReading4Kids and Toppsta.
  • Assist with coordinating competitions and sending out prizes
  • Work with the publicity assistant to managing interns, providing support and work for them to do
  • Work closely with the publicity assistant to organise key conferences throughout the year, including YALC and Comic-Con.
  • Providing staff cover events, conferences and launch parties, including those that may fall outside of contracted working hours.

What you’ll be doing

Creating marketing materials of the highest quality for the wide range of Hachette Children’s Group titles, reporting to the Group Marketing and Communications Director and part of the marketing team.

This is a uniquely varied role, working with some of the most respected brands, authors and illustrators in the industry and requires working closely with editors and designers to ensure synergies between the printed book and marketing materials. Creative flair on all projects whether big or small is vital.

The job will require working on multiple projects at any one time but typical activities will include: producing new ideas and concepts, working with a wide range of media, including digital, reflective and photographic artwork, visualising and art-working skills, working on layouts, art-working pages and preparing files ready for print, working with the marketing team to deliver the final files to printers or other partners, keeping abreast of relevant software such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.

Who we are looking for

The successful candidate will be an excellent designer and artworker and will have demonstrable creative ability, with at least 2 years’ experience in marketing design, ideally within the publishing industry.

You will be a fully trained and experienced user of Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign. You will be an excellent communicator and work well under pressure. You will have great attention to detail, a can-do attitude and be able to manage your time and prioritise your workload.
